Maine
Maine splits in two for October. The North Zone shuts under general law across six areas, while dozens of named South Zone waters carry fall extensions that run into November. A Maine angler in October is not out of options, they are out of options in the north.
Trout stocking
Maine ran fall brook trout and landlocked salmon stocking through the first week of October. The narrative regional report from the state is monthly and lags, but its stocking list is current to within a day and is the better document to read.
MDIFW current stocking reportWhat the rules say
- A new rule took effect on 1 September 2026: painted lead jigs 2.5 inches or shorter, or weighing one ounce or less, are prohibited. Sale restrictions are statewide and use restrictions apply to inland waters.
- North Zone covers six areas: Aroostook, Penobscot north of Routes 11 and 157, Piscataquis, Somerset, Franklin, and Oxford north of the Androscoggin.
- Grand Lake Stream, in the South Zone, is fly fishing only, and from 1 October to 25 October all fish must be released alive at once, with no size or bag limit on largemouth. Closed to all fishing within 150 feet of the dam.
- East Grand Lake is the opposite case: closed to all fishing from 1 October to 31 December.
- Many named South Zone waters carry an artificial-lures-only extension with a bag restriction from 1 October to 30 November.

What to expect from the fish
The quarter the fishing moves from salt to fresh and from big water to small. The north closes at the end of September for a biological reason rather than a bureaucratic one, and water that was too shallow to bother with in summer becomes worth a cast.
- Brook Trout
On gravel or running for it through the back half, which is what the northern season dates are built around.
Where they are. Pushing into water too small to have held them in August, well up into feeders a boot can step across.
- Landlocked Salmon
Staging, then running, as the first genuinely cold water arrives.
Where they are. The heads of the big lakes and the mouths of cold feeders, shallower than any summer trolling pass would have gone.
- Smallmouth Bass
Feeding hard in the last warm water they will see, in the Belgrades and through the Penobscot drainage.
Where they are. Sliding off the dying weed onto the first hard bottom outside it.
- Striped Bass
Largely gone south by the end, so the salt fishery thins while the fresh one improves.
Where they are. What stays is in the lower rivers and estuaries rather than out on the open coast.
the Rangeley Lakes
Rangeley Lake · Mooselookmeguntic · the Richardson Lakes · the Kennebago · Upper Dam
A chain of big cold lakes in the western mountains, the water that made Maine famous for brook trout and landlocked salmon. Deep and slow to warm, so the season runs late here and the fish stay catchable through a summer that shuts the rivers down.

The best stretch of that day runs 6am to 6pm, in local time at the water.
The engine has brook trout here on the spawn.
Across the 14 days it could grade, the water is projected to fall 7 degrees. That is a forecast, not a pair of readings.
Depth to try, in typical conditions: plunge pools, undercuts and pocket water 1-4 ft.
The bait is at its active temperature. Small dries and a bead-head dropper. In headwater streams the fly matters less than the approach.
Moosehead and the Penobscot
Moosehead Lake · the East Outlet · the Penobscot River · the West Branch · Millinocket
The largest lake in the state and the big river draining the country east of it. The West Branch below Ripogenus is a dam release and fishes cold all season, while Moosehead is deep enough to hold lake trout through anything the weather does.
The one Maine sub-region where somebody publishes live numbers, and it is not a fishing reporter. Brookfield works the gates at the Moosehead outlets and posts the lake level and the East Outlet gate flow through the day. That matters more here than a forecast would, because the East Outlet is a tailwater and its salmon fishing follows what the gates are doing rather than what the sky is. The lake itself has no temperature gauge anywhere on it, which is why our own figure for Moosehead is modelled and labelled as such.

The bait is at its active temperature. Spoons and tube jigs deep; at ice-out they will chase a shallow-trolled stickbait.

The bait is at its active temperature. Crawfish imitations near rock; tube jigs and ned rigs.
Grand Lake Stream and Downeast
Grand Lake Stream · West Grand Lake · Big Lake · the St Croix · the Machias
A short and famous river between two lakes, with the lake country and the rivers running to the Bay of Fundy coast behind it. The flows are controlled at the dam, which makes this one of the few places in Maine where you can know what the water will be doing before you set out.

Sebago and the southern lakes
Sebago Lake · Long Lake · the Presumpscot · Panther Pond · Jordan Bay
The deepest lake in the state, an hour from Portland and fished accordingly. Landlocked salmon hold deep through the summer and come up as the surface cools, which makes autumn the one stretch of the year the fishery is in reach of somebody standing on the bank.
Mixed from the surface down to about thirty feet, every sensor between 60.6F and 60.8F. The thermocline sits between thirty-six and fifty feet, where the water falls from 58.6F to 49.3F, and the bottom at a hundred and twenty-two feet reads 45.8F. Preliminary data, not yet reviewed.

The best stretch of that day runs 6am to 3pm, in local time at the water.
The engine has landlocked salmon here staging to spawn.
Across the 14 days it could grade, the water is projected to fall 7 degrees. That is a forecast, not a pair of readings.
Depth to try, in typical conditions: top 10-25 ft over deep water, near shoals and points.
The bait is above it. Rainbow smelt above everything else. Growth is poor in lakes without them, so streamer patterns and spoons that imitate a smelt are the standard, fished shallow in spring and on the thermocline in summer.
Who reports on this water
Maine has far more water than it has publishers, and the gaps compound. No gauge covers its big lakes, so the engine figures for Sebago, Moosehead and Rangeley are modelled rather than measured, which means the one state where the engine has to carry the section alone is also the state where the engine has least to work from. The state's own regional narrative report is monthly and was still showing September in the second week of October, though its stocking list is current to within a day and worth reading directly. Four sub-regions have no reporter: the Belgrade Lakes, the Downeast coast, the Fish River Lakes and Aroostook, and the midcoast.
