Free Fishing Days 2026 by State
Every date you can fish without a licence, for all 50 states and Washington DC. Each entry links to the agency that sets it.
Next free fishing day
Saturday, August 8, 2026
- Connecticut — Anglers 16 and older must obtain a free one-day licence through the Sportsmen Licensing System. It opens three weeks before the date.
What a free fishing day does and does not cover
A free fishing day waives the licence fee. It waives nothing else. Seasons, size limits, bag limits, gear restrictions, closed waters and landowner permission all still apply exactly as they would any other day.
Three things catch people out, and all three are marked on the entries below. First, 9 states limit at least one free day to their own residents, so a visitor still needs a licence. Second, a handful of states waive the fee but still require you to obtain a free permit or registration in advance: turning up without it is the same violation as fishing unlicensed. Third, some states keep specific species fully licensed even on a free day, such as salmon and steelhead in Washington and paddlefish and bull trout in Montana.
Dates change every year, and a few states set them by proclamation rather than by a fixed rule. Every entry names the agency and links to its page. If you are planning around one of these dates, check the agency page too.

HIHawaii does not offer a free fishing day.
Hawaii offers no free fishing day, because its licensing works differently. Residents never need a recreational saltwater licence in state waters. Freshwater and saltwater run on entirely separate dates, administered by different divisions. The freshwater weekend runs 12 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday. A search summary claimed additional February, September and November dates; mass.gov lists none, so they are excluded.

Still required: All other regulations. Privately owned pay lakes still charge.
Tennessee Wildlife Resources AgencyTexas
TX- Sat, Jun 6Fresh + saltFree Fishing Day
The first Saturday in June every year, so it resolves automatically; TPWD's own page cites June 5 2027, which confirms the rule (one aggregator wrongly listed June 7 2026). Separately, Texas waives the licence YEAR-ROUND inside the boundaries of 70-plus state parks, for residents and non-residents of any age. That exemption is limited to pole-and-line fishing with two poles per person on docks, piers and jetties, is void if you wade out or launch a boat, and park entry fees still apply.
Still required: Bag limits, size limits and catch restrictions.
Also waived: Freshwater and saltwater endorsements.

Virginia Department of Wildlife ResourcesWashington
WA- Sat, Jun 6 to Sun, Jun 7Fresh + saltFree Fishing WeekendAnyone 15 or older still needs a licence to keep any species that requires a catch record card (salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, halibut) or to harvest shellfish.
Always the first weekend after the first Monday in June. The catch-record-card carve-out is significant: salmon and steelhead, the species most visitors want, are not actually free.

Also waived: Discover Pass on WDFW and Washington State Park lands.
Washington Department of Fish and WildlifeWest Virginia

Wisconsin Department of Natural ResourcesWyoming
WY- Sat, Jun 6FreshwaterFree Fishing Day
Game and Fish designates the first Saturday of National Fishing and Boating Week, which is the first Saturday in June, so it resolves automatically. The tribal and national-park exclusions matter: Yellowstone runs its own permit system.
Still required: Creel and size limits, gear restrictions and stream closures. Does not apply within the Wind River Reservation or Yellowstone National Park.
Wyoming Game and Fish DepartmentWhich states have free fishing days in June?
June is by far the busiest month, because most states time their free days to National Fishing and Boating Week, which falls in the first full week of June. In 2026, 41 jurisdictions have at least one free fishing date in June.
The other clusters are Independence Day, which North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Mississippi all use, and the winter ice-fishing weekends run by Michigan, Wisconsin, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Oregon and North Dakota.
Free fishing days in 2027
13 of 51 jurisdictions have 2027 dates that can be worked out already, because they set their free days by a fixed rule rather than announcing them each year. The rest usually publish in late winter.

Alaska and Hawaii. Hawaii does not need one for saltwater: residents never require a recreational marine licence, and only non-residents 15 and older do. Alaska runs no free day either, but exempts residents 60 and older, resident disabled veterans, resident children under 18 and non-resident children under 16 all year round.
