Mississippi Trout Stocking Report 2026
Every sentence here comes from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP), and each section names its sources. Updated .
MDWFP stocks rainbow trout once each winter into the bank-fishing pond at Lake Lamar Bruce, a state fishing lake near Saltillo in Lee County. In December 2023 MDWFP called it the only public water in Mississippi with rainbow trout fishing. Trout are not native to Mississippi and MDWFP's hatcheries do not raise them. The stocked fish come from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery.

When Mississippi stocks trout
One winter stocking, in December or January
The trout go in once a winter, in December or January: more than 600 on January 10, 2018, more than 700 on December 6, 2018, and 700 on December 16, 2020. MDWFP announced its most recent reported stocking, 700 fish, on December 6, 2023. Trout bite readily in the cold months, and the fishing lasts through the winter: in February 2025 trout were still being caught in the pond, with the bite expected to slow in the weeks after.

Rules on stocked water
- Residents 16 to 64 need a fishing license, and residents 65 and older must carry proof of their exemption. For residents, freshwater fishing comes with the $10 Small Game Hunting/Freshwater Fishing license, or $3 for three days. Nonresidents 16 and older pay $68 a year, $30 for three days or $10 for a day. Agent and processing fees are added to each.
- The pond is on a state fishing lake, so anglers also need a state lake permit: $5 a day to fish without launching a boat, or $55 a year from ages 16 to 61. Anglers under 16 fish free.
- The limit is 3 rainbow trout a day with no length limit, set for Lake Lamar Bruce in the state's creel rule.
