What are solunar tables?

Solunar tables predict fish activity from the positions of the sun and moon. Major periods fall when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot, minor periods at moonrise and moonset. The theory was set out by John Alden Knight in 1926, who screened 33 possible influences on fish behaviour and kept three: the sun, the moon and the tide.

Water temperature was not one of the three, and a century of fisheries research has since put it first. That is why the ratings on this calendar are lunar ratings rather than fishing grades: they cover the timing, which is the same everywhere, and not the water, which is not.
