Looking for a Farmers' Almanac fishing calendar? The almanacs rate fishing days by the moon. The Farmers' Almanac uses the moon's phase and the zodiac sign it is passing through, and The Old Farmer's Almanac maps its best days to the moon's phases. Ours rates the moon phase and the timing of each day's solunar feeding periods. The Farmers' Almanac itself says water temperature and the day's weather matter more than the moon on any single trip. What are solunar tables?

Solunar tables predict fish activity from the positions of the sun and moon. Major periods fall when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot, minor periods at moonrise and moonset. The theory was set out by John Alden Knight in 1926, who screened 33 possible influences on fish behavior and kept three: the sun, the moon and the tide.

Water temperature was not one of the three, and a century of fisheries research has since put it first. That is why the ratings on this calendar are lunar ratings rather than fishing grades: they cover the moon, set for the middle of the country, and not the water, which is different on every lake and river.
