Louisiana Fishing Report: November 2026 to February 2027

By Brian FralickPublished

From the Gulf Coast report for November 2026 to February 2027. The region's species and a month-by-month calendar are in the Gulf Coast fishing guide.

Southern flounder reopen on December 1 at ten a day with no minimum size, after six weeks closed. Red drum and speckled trout stay open all winter under the same limits as the rest of the year, and red snapper are closed for the rest of 2026. In the lower Atchafalaya Basin and the Saline-Larto lakes, black bass and crappie are under tighter limits that are new this year. A Texas or Mississippi resident can fish the shared border waters on a home license, and a Texas resident 65 or over with a Texas senior license can fish anywhere in the state.

What to fish for in early November

Winter is when the marsh concentrates. North winds drain it to its lowest water of the year, the fish leave the open bays for the bayous, canals and deep holes that stay mildest, and the water clears until they can be seen. Out at the delta, bass and redfish come out of the same roseau cane, and inland it is sac-a-lait season, on the north Louisiana lakes, in the Atchafalaya Basin and on Toledo Bend.

  • Spotted Seatrout

Moves out of open water into deep, sheltered water and stacks up there, and the big southwestern lakes give up their heaviest fish now, on the warming afternoons after a front.

Where. Deep bayou bends, dead-end canals and the deeper holes off the marsh from Hopedale to Cocodrie, and on Calcasieu Lake the mud flats and reefs once the sun has been on them.

  • Redfish (Red Drum)

Gets pushed together by the low winter tides and sits in clear, still water where it can be seen, then spreads back over the marsh when the water returns.

Where. Shallow ponds and bayous at the back of the marsh, from Delacroix and Hopedale down to Venice and across Barataria to Grand Isle.

  • Sheepshead

Picks barnacles off hard bottom all winter and spawns there as the quarter ends.

Where. The Lake Pontchartrain bridges and trestles, the Rigolets, the rock jetties and the old platforms off the marsh.

  • Crappie

Sac-a-lait, and the cold months are its season, on deep brush and timber along the creek and river channels until the late-winter warm spells pull it shallow.

Where. Caney, D'Arbonne and Claiborne in the north, Toledo Bend's creek channels, and the canals and borrow pits of the Atchafalaya Basin when the river is low.

  • Largemouth Bass

Feeds in the delta's fresh water alongside the redfish and holds on the deep edges of the hill lakes, and big fish come from Toledo Bend and Caney through the cold, ahead of the spawn.

Where. The roseau cane and canals around Venice, the Atchafalaya Basin's deeper canals, and Toledo Bend and Caney Lake.

This week's fishing reports

This report covers the season. For what was caught this week, read the people who report on this water.

Louisiana is thinly reported in winter, and almost none of it by shops, marinas or LDWF, which publishes no conditions report. Todd Masson's weekly videos covered the southeast marsh, Lake Pontchartrain and Venice; Joe Macaluso's Saturday column in The Advocate turned to fishing in February; Glynn Harris reported the north Louisiana lakes nearly every weekend; and the Great Days Outdoors delta podcast has run weekly since February. Calcasieu, Terrebonne, Vermilion Bay, Port Fourchon, the Atchafalaya Basin and the northwest lakes had nobody, and TPWD's pause took away the only measured water temperatures for Toledo Bend and Sabine Lake.

Where to fish in Louisiana, area by area

Each water links to its live forecast. The engine outlook in these areas was generated November 3, 2026, for the 14 days from that date; good hours are the hours at or above a B+.

The southeast marsh, Delacroix to Hopedale and Lake Borgne

Delacroix · Hopedale · Shell Beach · Lake Borgne · Breton Sound

Broken marsh east of the Mississippi River in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes: ponds, bayous and canals behind Breton Sound and the Chandeleur Islands, with Lake Borgne along the northern edge. It is reached by boat from a handful of landings, and much of it is shallow enough that a strong north wind leaves a boat sitting on mud.

Who reports here. Todd Masson's weekly Marsh Man Masson videos, each with a short dated introduction on Louisiana Sportsman, covered Delacroix, Hopedale and Lake Borgne every week last winter, and the Great Days Outdoors delta podcast has added a weekly report since February. No landing or marina here publishes its own.

Lake Pontchartrain and the North Shore

Lake Pontchartrain · the Rigolets · Chef Menteur Pass · Slidell · Lake Maurepas

A big, shallow, brackish lake north of New Orleans, crossed by the Causeway and the interstate bridges and tied to the Gulf through the Rigolets and Chef Menteur Pass. The bridges, trestles and passes hold fish when the open lake does not, and rivers on the north side run down into it from the piney woods.

Who reports here. Masson's videos reached Lake Pontchartrain and the Rigolets, and the delta podcast has covered the North Shore weekly since February; nobody in Slidell or along the north side publishes a dated report. WWL's Saturday radio show with Don Dubuc ended on February 7.

Engine outlook

Venice and the Mississippi River delta

Venice · Southwest Pass · South Pass · Pass a Loutre · Buras

The end of the road at the mouth of the Mississippi, where the river splits into its passes and builds land into the Gulf. River water and Gulf water meet across a few miles, so the fishing moves with every rise and fall of the river, from bass and redfish together in the roseau cane to deep Gulf water a short run from the dock.

Who reports here. Venice is in Masson's videos and, since February, the delta podcast every week; the marinas at Venice and Buras post only on social media. It is left out of the outlook below, because the nearest thermometers are a buoy in the open Gulf off Southwest Pass and the river itself at Pilottown.

Barataria Bay, Lafitte and Grand Isle

Lafitte · Barataria Bay · Grand Isle · Port Fourchon · Caminada Pass

One long estuary running from the swamps around Lafitte down through Barataria Bay to the barrier island at Grand Isle, with Port Fourchon and Leeville to the west. Inside it is marsh, oyster reef and canals; at the bottom the passes and the island's rocks and surf face the Gulf.

Who reports here. Nothing dated reached the web for Lafitte before February, when the delta podcast began covering it along with Grand Isle. Port Fourchon and Leeville had nobody at all.

Engine outlook

Terrebonne and Cocodrie

Cocodrie · Dulac · Dularge · Chauvin · Pointe-aux-Chenes

Ridges of high ground running south from Houma, each with its bayou and its road, and between them miles of broken marsh and shallow bays opening onto Terrebonne and Timbalier bays. The land here is sinking and washing away, so the water on a chart and the water a boat finds are often different.

Who reports here. No publisher could be shown to report this stretch of the coast in winter, or at any other time of year.

Vermilion Bay and Cypremort Point

Vermilion Bay · Cypremort Point · Marsh Island · Cote Blanche Bay · Atchafalaya Bay

Big, open, muddy bays west of the Atchafalaya's mouth, where the river's fresh water and silt spread across the coast. Marsh Island shelters them from the Gulf; the water runs fresher and murkier than the coast to the east, and clears and turns saltier as the river falls.

Who reports here. Nobody publishes a dated fishing report for Vermilion Bay, Cypremort Point or Marsh Island.

Calcasieu Lake and the southwest

Calcasieu Lake · Big Lake · Hackberry · Cameron · the Calcasieu Ship Channel

A shallow estuary lake south of Lake Charles, cut through by the deep ship channel to Cameron and ringed by marsh and shell reefs. Its mud flats and reefs are fished for big speckled trout, and the channel and the jetties at Cameron tie it to the Gulf.

Who reports here. Hackberry Rod and Gun posted three updates all last winter, and the American Press fishing report ended in 2021, which leaves the lake with almost no dated voice through the months it is most fished. A dredging spill in August 2025 left mud over reefs in the southwest of the lake, by an LDWF biologist's account in Louisiana Sportsman.

Engine outlook

The Atchafalaya Basin

Atchafalaya Basin · Henderson Swamp · Lake Martin · Lake Palourde · Lake Verrett

A vast river swamp held between levees, flooded and drained by the Atchafalaya every year: cypress and tupelo, bayous, canals and the borrow pits along the levees. When the river is low the fish pull out of the swamp into the deeper canals and pits, and when it rises they spread back out into the trees.

Who reports here. Nobody reports the Basin or Henderson Swamp in winter. The tighter black bass and crappie limits in the lower Basin, new on August 1, 2026, are this winter's first.

The north Louisiana lakes

Caney Lake · Lake D'Arbonne · Bussey Brake · Lake Claiborne · the Ouachita River

Hill-country reservoirs and river backwaters in the north of the state, some clear and deep, Caney for big largemouth, others stained and timbered, D'Arbonne for crappie. The Ouachita runs down through the middle of them with its oxbows and backwater lakes.

Who reports here. Glynn Harris's fishing report in the Jackson Parish Journal ran nearly every weekend last winter, water by water, built from the landings and tackle shops he calls. No other Louisiana fresh water was reported as often.

The northwest lakes around Shreveport

Cross Lake · Black Lake · Lake Bistineau · Caddo Lake

Cypress lakes and reservoirs around Shreveport, several of them choked with giant salvinia and drawn down on purpose to fight it. Caddo Lake, on the Texas line, is a maze of cypress and boat roads shared between the two states.

Who reports here. Nobody reports Cross Lake, Black Lake or Bistineau in winter, and LDWF's drawdown notices are the only dated word on them.

Toledo Bend

Toledo Bend · Sabine River

A huge reservoir on the Sabine, shared with Texas, with drowned timber across its flats and creek arms. Its level and its winter generation are set by the river authorities, and when the water drops the fish move off the shallow grass onto the creek channels.

Who reports here. TPWD's report, republished by KOGT, gave the lake's level and water temperature about every two weeks last winter and stopped in February. The Sabine River Authority posts level and generation, and the Lunker Bass Program logged eighteen bass of ten pounds or more over the winter.

The rules from November to February

What changed this time

  • New since August 1, 2026: in the lower Atchafalaya Basin, with Grassy Lake, Lake Palourde and Lake Verrett, black bass are five a day of at least 12 inches and crappie 25 of at least 8 inches, against ten bass with no minimum and fifty crappie elsewhere.
  • New since September 20, 2026: in the Saline-Larto Complex (Saline, Larto and Shad lakes), black bass are eight a day of at least 14 inches and crappie 25 of at least 10 inches.
  • Red snapper closed on September 7 for the rest of 2026, with the final count 5.7 percent over Louisiana's allocation, so no reopening is expected.
  • LDWF's saltwater page still prints a closure beyond 20 fathoms from February 1 to March 31 for state waters. The federal closure it matched was removed on October 2, 2026, so the two no longer agree; ask LDWF before keeping a grouper offshore in February.
  • Pending: a rule giving 48 hours instead of 24 to check trotlines, limb lines, yo-yos and jugs, and one requiring an engine cut-off lanyard on every boat under 26 feet. The Commission meets on November 5, December 3, January 5 and February 4.

Read on October 11, 2026, from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' license, saltwater finfish and freshwater finfish pages, its news releases and its Commission page, from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks' reciprocal agreement page for the waters the two states share, and from the Federal Register for federal water.

Licenses, and which state's rules apply
  • Anyone 18 or older needs a Basic Fishing license, and south of the saltwater line a Saltwater license as well; the department's own advice is to buy both anywhere in south Louisiana rather than try to find the line. A visitor can buy a five-day license. Annual licenses run 365 days from purchase, and one bought online arrives as a temporary authorization number and a PDF to keep on a phone.
  • Residents of Louisiana and Texas may fish the waters the two states share, Caddo Lake, Toledo Bend, the Sabine River, Sabine Lake and Sabine Pass, on a home-state license, but not the Gulf. Residents of Louisiana and Mississippi may do the same on the Pearl and East Pearl Rivers and the Mississippi River where they form the state line. A Texas resident 65 or older holding a Texas senior license may fish any Louisiana water.
  • Keeping snapper, grouper, amberjack, cobia, gray triggerfish, tuna, billfish, wahoo or dolphinfish takes the free Recreational Offshore Landing Permit as well, unless the angler is under 18 or on a paid charter.
Bait, gear and fish you cannot keep
  • Tilapia, snakeheads, Asian swamp eels, piranha, rudd and the other listed exotics may not be possessed, sold or brought into Louisiana, and an Asian carp or a Rio Grande cichlid caught in state waters may not be put back or kept alive.
  • No one may hold more than a day's bag of any species on the water. Saltwater possession limits are the daily bag unless stated otherwise; ashore, two days' bag of red drum or speckled trout may be held. Fresh water allows twice the daily bag in possession.
Lakes, ponds and rivers
  • Black bass are ten a day with no minimum in most water. Toledo Bend and the Sabine above it are eight a day with largemouth at least 14 inches, Caddo Lake eight with a 14 to 18-inch protected slot, and in the lower Atchafalaya Basin with Lake Palourde, Lake Verrett and Grassy Lake, five of at least 12 inches. Several other lakes run their own limits.
  • Crappie are 50 a day in most water but 25 on Toledo Bend, Caddo Lake and the Sabine River, and 25 of at least 8 inches in the lower Atchafalaya Basin. White bass are 50 a day, and striped and hybrid striped bass five, no more than two over 30 inches.
Salt water
  • Red drum are four a day between 18 and 27 inches, none over 27, and none may be kept from federal water. Speckled trout are 15 a day between 13 and 20 inches, of which two may be over 20. Both are open all year in state waters.
  • Southern flounder are closed from October 15 to November 30, then ten a day at any size. Black drum are five a day between 16 and 27 inches, one of which may be over 27, and sheepshead have no limit at all.
  • Offshore, black, red and yellowfin grouper and scamp close from February 1 to March 31 in state waters beyond the 20-fathom line, and seasons in federal water off the coast can differ from the state's.
