Massachusetts
One date matters in Massachusetts this month, and it is the 15th, when the tautog bag goes from three fish to five. Nothing else in the state's October changes.
Trout stocking
Massachusetts runs a fall stocking programme alongside its spring one, and the state publishes a map rather than a list, which is the right shape for the question. Check it by town before you drive.
MassWildlife trout stocking report and mapWhat the rules say
- Tautog: 16 inch minimum, and only one fish may exceed 21 inches.
- Three fish per angler from 1 August to 14 October, then five fish from 15 October to 31 December.
- Ten tautog per vessel, in all periods.
Read from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries' own recreational table, and the boundary confirmed in 322 CMR 6.40.
What to expect from the fish
The fall run is the state's quarter and what it does is funnel: fish that spread along the whole coast in summer compress into the Canal, around the Cape beaches and through the rips, following bait doing the same thing. Structure and current, not spots. A blitz is a moving target along a beach and chasing it on foot is most of the skill.
- Striped Bass
Compressing out of a summer-long spread into the funnels as the bait does the same.
Where they are. The Canal runs on the tide rather than on the clock, and the ocean beaches fish a moving tide.
- Bluefish
Running with the bass and often ahead of them, breaking up bait that the bass then work under.
Where they are. The same funnels, and frequently the visible half of a blitz.
- Tautog
Moving onto hard structure as the water comes down, and improving as it does.
Where they are. On rock and wreck rather than near it, which is a tighter requirement than it sounds.
- Rainbow Trout
The fall stocking goes in and those fish have learned nothing yet.
Where they are. Close to where the truck reached the water, since nothing has moved them.
Cape Cod and the Canal
Cape Cod Canal · Cape Cod Bay · Buzzards Bay · Outer Cape · Cape Cod · Orleans
A seven-mile ditch connecting two bays with different tides, which makes a current strong enough to stack bait against the rock and to end the fishing the moment it slackens. The Cape beyond it is open sand on one side and warm bay on the other, and the two fish on different schedules.
Following the recent Nor'easter, bass are pinned deep, keying on heavy bait movement. Keep your lures down in the water column and stay glued to the bottom structure.
Engine outlook
- Cape Cod CanalStriped BassBest: Thu, Oct 22, A+9 good hours60F measured on this waterbest run 5hOur read
The best stretch of that day runs 2pm to 7pm, in local time at the water.
The engine has striped bass here feeding hard ahead of winter.
Across the 14 days it could grade, the water is projected to fall 3 degrees. That is a forecast, not a pair of readings.
Depth to try, in high pressure: 15-30 ft deeper structure.
The bait is at its active temperature. Live-line bunker; bucktails with pork rind on outgoing.
the Islands, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket
Martha's Vineyard · Oak Bluffs pier · Nantucket · Nantucket Sound · Great Point · Madaket
Two islands sitting in the middle of the migration with rips, points and a famous five-week derby. Fish passing the mainland have to pass these first, which is why the islands often turn on before the coast does.
The Martha's Vineyard derby runs for five weeks from mid-September, so it is live right now and it is numbered by derby week rather than by date. It has already moved the record book: Massachusetts now has a false albacore record of 19 pounds 14 ounces, caught by Sherry Countryman off Nantucket while she was fishing the derby from a boat, and the mark it beat had stood since 1990. Three weeks later the derby ran its false albacore day and not one fish was weighed in, from shore or from boat. Nantucket's own weekly report closed for the season in September and says so plainly, which is the fishery winding down rather than the reporter giving up.
Throughout the week, Dave and I searched for albies. Not only did we fail to find one, but the entire Derby community wasn't finding them.
Boston Harbor and the South Shore
Boston Harbor · Massachusetts Bay · Hingham Bay · Weymouth Fore River · Quincy Bay · South Shore
A working harbour with islands, drop-offs and more structure than it looks, fished from small boats inside a major city. The rivers running into it drop their temperature before the open bay does, which moves fish around predictably in autumn.

Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires
Deerfield River · Westfield River · Swift River · Millers River · Quabbin · Connecticut River valley
Cold rivers in hills, plus the largest inland body of water in the state. The Deerfield is a dam release and fishes cold all summer; the Swift comes out of the bottom of Quabbin and is one of the few genuinely year-round trout fisheries in New England. Quabbin itself has never had a reporter.
Every dedicated western Massachusetts source is dark. The Deerfield shop report last ran in July 2025, one guide last posted in 2023, and the Millers River forum stopped in 2024 after seventeen years. Quabbin has never had a reporter at all. You are not quite on your own, though, and it took looking outside fishing reports to find it: the Deerfield is a Brookfield release, and the operator publishes what it is letting out of Fife Brook through the day. On a dam-controlled river that is the number that decides the fishing, so read it rather than wait for a shop report that is not coming.
Who reports on this water
Cape Cod and the Islands are the best-covered saltwater in the region, with several shops and a media brand publishing weekly or better. Two parts of the state have nothing. Every dedicated western Massachusetts source is dark, which leaves the Deerfield, the Westfield, the Swift, the Millers and Quabbin with no live reporter between them, and Quabbin has never had one. On the Outer Cape the last tackle shop in Provincetown closed around 2015, so there is no local voice along the whole Wellfleet to Provincetown stretch.
