Overview
Pacific halibut are the largest flatfish in the world and the fish that defines a saltwater trip across most of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. They are demersal, meaning they live on the bottom, and they are caught almost entirely on bait fished hard on that bottom in 100 to 300 feet of water. Fish over a hundred pounds are landed every season, and the largest exceed four hundred.
Pacific halibut hold from about 36 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit with an ideal near 50. That ideal comes from an unusually relevant piece of research. Most fisheries temperature work measures growth or survival, which is only loosely connected to whether a fish will eat your bait today. A 2006 study specifically tested activity and feeding motivation in Pacific halibut across a 2 to 10 degree Celsius range, and it is close to the question this forecast actually asks.
The results were clean. At 2 degrees Celsius, spontaneous activity was essentially zero. As temperature rose, so did search intensity, the number of baits located, attacked and consumed, and the speed with which the fish did each of those things. Just as usefully, food deprivation over one to fourteen days made no significant difference to activity, so hunger is not the variable. Temperature is. For a fish caught exclusively on baited gear, that is close to a direct measurement of catchability, and it is why water temperature carries more weight in this profile than in most.

Seasonal Patterns
spring
Fish move back onto the shelf from the deep water where they spawned, and the season opens across most of the range in March. Early-season fish are thin and recovering from spawning, and the fishing improves steadily rather than starting well. Water is at its coldest, which by the temperature relationship above is the least favourable part of the year for bait fishing.
summer
The main season. Halibut are spread across shelf feeding grounds in 100 to 300 feet, water has warmed to the top of its annual range, and both fish activity and angler access are at their best. June and July carry the bulk of the effort across Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, and this is when most people who fish for halibut do it.
fall
The biggest seasonal lift we apply to this species. August and September fish are at their heaviest after a full season of feeding on the shelf, water is still near its annual maximum, and the largest fish of the year come out. Weather starts to limit access before the fishing falls off, which is the usual constraint on a late-season halibut trip.
winter
Effectively no fishery. Halibut move off the shelf to spawn on the continental slope in 600 to 1500 feet from November through March, well below and well outside where anyone fishes for them, and the season is closed across most of the range regardless. Water is also at its coldest, which is where activity approaches nothing.
Best Times to Fish
dawn
A modest edge, and it is largely about boats leaving harbour early rather than about the fish. A halibut in 300 feet of water is not experiencing sunrise. The one honest thing to say for dawn is that it usually comes with the calmest water of the day, which matters for getting out at all.
midday
Fully productive, and unremarkable in the good sense. There is no midday lull for a fish that lives below the reach of surface light, so the middle of the day is a normal part of a halibut trip rather than a stretch to endure.
dusk
Similar to midday, with access rather than the fish being the limiting factor as the light goes. Most halibut effort is on charter or private boats working a day trip, so the evening is rarely fished hard.
night
Barely fished, though not because the fish stop. Depth, distance offshore and the practicalities of running a boat in the dark keep almost everyone off the water. Where the season and the weather allow it, night fishing works.
solunar
Moderate solunar sensitivity, and the tide is the part that matters rather than the lunar period itself. Current carries the scent plume that halibut hunt by. A strong moving tide is worth planning around; slack water is the dead part of the day whatever the moon is doing.
Weather Response
The pressure change is close to irrelevant at depth. What matters is the wind that comes with a front, because halibut grounds are offshore and a front that makes a bar or a crossing unsafe cancels the trip regardless of how the fish are feeding.
Mildly helpful over a season rather than a day. Warmer water raises feeding motivation for this species in a directly measured way, so the warmest stretch of the year is also the best fishing, but a single front will not move bottom temperature at 200 feet.
Settled weather is the single most useful forecast for halibut, and it is about access rather than the bite. Calm seas mean the offshore grounds are reachable and a day on anchor is bearable. Plan a halibut trip around the wind window first and everything else second.
Almost no effect. Rain does not reach a fish at 200 feet, and unlike inshore species halibut are not responding to runoff, colour or shoreline food. Fish through it. Only the wind that usually accompanies it matters.
Proven Techniques
Whole Herring on a Circle Hook
The standard, and the presentation the research is effectively describing. A whole or plug-cut herring on a 16/0 circle hook and a spreader bar or sliding sinker rig, fished hard on the bottom. Scent is the entire game: halibut locate bait by the plume rather than by sight, so freshness and a bait that leaks are worth more than anything else in the rig.
Salmon Heads and Carcasses
Large oily bait for large fish. A salmon head fished on the bottom puts out a scent trail far bigger than a herring and is the standard approach for anglers specifically targeting fish over a hundred pounds, at the cost of fewer bites overall. Common in Alaska where salmon carcasses are abundant.
Jigging Heavy Metal
A 16 to 32 ounce leadhead or diamond jig, worked with long lifts off the bottom. Less productive than bait on average but far more active, and it lets you cover a drift rather than sitting on anchor. Often tipped with a strip of herring or octopus to add the scent that bare metal lacks.
Anchoring the Scent Trail
Anchoring up-current of a piece of structure and letting a bait scent plume develop downstream pulls fish to the boat rather than the other way round. The most effective method when fish are scattered, and it depends entirely on current: with no water moving there is no plume, and halibut fishing on slack water is close to dead time.
Drifting Shelf Structure
Covering ground with bait or jigs while drifting across gravel humps, mud edges and shelf breaks. The search technique for a fishery where finding a concentration matters more than presenting perfectly. Once a drift produces, anchor and let the scent do the rest.
Pacific Halibut vs Flounder
Both are flatfish that lie on the bottom and ambush what passes, and there the similarity stops. One is an inshore fish you can catch from a kayak and the other needs a boat, a winch of a reel, and a weather window.

What water temperature is best for Pacific halibut?
Around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, in a band from roughly 36 to 60, and this species has better evidence behind that number than most. A 2006 study tested halibut activity and feeding motivation across 2 to 10 degrees Celsius and found spontaneous activity essentially zero at the cold end, rising steadily with temperature, along with more baits located, attacked and consumed and faster times to do each. Because halibut are caught almost exclusively on baited gear, that is close to a direct measurement of catchability rather than a proxy for it, which is why water temperature carries more weight in this profile than in most.
Does being hungry make halibut easier to catch?
Apparently not, which is one of the more surprising findings in the same study. Fish deprived of food for anywhere from one to fourteen days showed no significant difference in activity either before or after a scent cue was introduced. Temperature drove the response and hunger did not. The practical read is that you should not think of a slow day as fish that are not hungry yet, and you should not expect a spell of poor feeding conditions to produce a compensating bite afterwards. Fish the temperature and the current.
What time of day is best for halibut?
Time of day matters less for halibut than for almost any species on this site, and the tide matters more. A fish sitting on the bottom in 200 to 300 feet is well below the reach of surface light, so it does not experience dawn and dusk the way an inshore fish does. What changes through the day is current, because halibut hunt by following a scent plume and slack water means no plume. Plan around moving water rather than around the clock. The modest morning edge in this forecast reflects boats leaving harbour early and calmer seas, not the fish.
Why is barometric pressure weighted low for halibut?
Depth. A halibut at 200 feet is under roughly seven atmospheres of water pressure. A large barometric swing is about thirty millibars, which is three percent of one atmosphere and well under one percent of what the fish is already experiencing. Whatever barometric change does to a fish in ten feet of water, it is a vanishingly small proportional change down there. This forecast weights pressure low for halibut and lake trout for the same reason, and puts the weight on temperature and current instead.
Is Pacific halibut the same as California halibut?
No, and the distinction matters if you are fishing anywhere near the boundary. Pacific halibut range from roughly northern California north through the Gulf of Alaska and into the Bering Sea, live on the offshore shelf in deep water, and commonly exceed twenty pounds. California halibut are a different species found from about central California south, live much shallower and closer in, are considerably smaller, and are fished with entirely different tackle and methods. This forecast covers the Pacific halibut only, and its range reflects that.
When is halibut season?
Broadly March through November, with the exact dates set annually by the International Pacific Halibut Commission and varying by regulatory area, so check the current rules before planning. The bulk of the effort falls in June and July when weather and access are best. August and September produce the biggest fish, because halibut have been feeding on the shelf all season and water is still near its annual peak. There is no winter fishery: from November the fish move off the shelf to spawn on the continental slope in 600 to 1500 feet, far below where anyone fishes for them.
