What Turnover Actually Is
Through the summer a deep lake sits in three layers: warm light water on top, a narrow band where the temperature falls away fast (the thermocline), and cold dense water underneath. That middle band is a wall. Oxygen above it is plentiful, oxygen below it is often nearly gone by August, and fish live in the top layer because it is the only comfortable place with air in it. Autumn takes the wall down. Cool nights pull heat out of the surface, and once the top layer chills to roughly the same density as the water beneath it, wind is enough to stir the whole basin. The lake mixes top to bottom. That mixing is turnover, and it usually arrives when surface temperatures fall through the upper 50s, typically after a run of several cold nights that knocks 10 to 15 degrees off the top layer in short order. Shallow lakes and rivers barely do this at all. The deeper and clearer the lake, the sharper the event.
How to Tell It Is Happening
Turnover announces itself, and the signs are easier to read from the boat than from any forecast. The water goes off-colour, sometimes to an unpleasant brownish green, because everything that had settled on the bottom for three months is suddenly in suspension. You may see small bubbles rising in open water, and on some lakes there is a distinct smell as decayed material comes up from the depths. Your electronics get noisy and the fish stop being where they should be: instead of relating to structure they scatter and suspend at random depths, which is the single most reliable tell. If you were catching fish consistently on a pattern a week earlier and the same spots now show suspended marks that will not bite, the lake has probably turned. Note that big lakes turn over in sections rather than all at once, so one arm can be a mess while another is still fishing normally. That is worth knowing, because it means driving is often a better response than changing lures.
Why the Fishing Gets Hard
Two things happen at once and both work against you. The oxygen that was concentrated in the top ten feet is now spread through the whole water column, along with the decayed material from the bottom, and the mixing itself consumes oxygen as that material breaks down. Fish that were stacked in a predictable band are now free to be anywhere, and so is their food. A bass that spent August on one point because it was the only place with oxygen and shade has no reason to be there any more. The fish are not sick and they are not gone, they are simply dispersed and unmotivated, and the patterns that worked all summer stop producing because the conditions that created them have been erased. Expect two to three weeks on most lakes.
How to Fish It Anyway
Fish the places turnover reaches last or not at all. Creek arms and shallow bays with their own inflow often stay clearer and stabilise sooner than the main basin, and moving water never stratified in the first place, so rivers and tailwaters are the honest answer if you need to catch something this weekend. On the lake itself, target the cleanest water you can find rather than the deepest, work shallower than instinct suggests, and slow down: dispersed fish are not competing, so a bait has to stay in front of one long enough to be worth eating. Wind-blown shorelines are the exception to the go-shallow rule, because they concentrate whatever plankton and baitfish are still organised. It is also a good two weeks to go scouting, since a lake with everything in suspension will show you bottom composition and structure on electronics that you would otherwise be guessing at.
The Payoff on the Other Side
This is the part worth waiting for. Once the lake finishes mixing, the whole basin holds oxygen for the first time since spring, and the water is cold enough that fish feed hard ahead of winter. The entire water column opens up: baitfish that spent the summer sheltering behind the thermocline lose their refuge, and predators get access to everything at once. The fortnight after turnover completes is some of the best fishing of the year, and it lines up with the fall feed-up that most species are already entering.
