Overview

Steelhead are rainbow trout that went to sea, came back, and became a different fish in the process. Genetically they are the same species as the rainbow trout stocked in ponds across the country. Behaviourally they have almost nothing in common with it, because a steelhead in a river is not there to eat. It has stopped feeding for the season and is holding, moving and preparing to spawn, and every useful thing an angler knows about them follows from that one fact.

Steelhead hold from about 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit with an ideal near 52. The angling literature converges tightly here: an active window of roughly 42 to 58 degrees, peak aggression between 50 and 55, and activity approaching zero below 36. That cold floor bites harder than it does for resident rainbow trout, which is why this profile treats cold more harshly than the rainbow trout profile does. A rainbow in 38-degree water is still feeding to grow. A steelhead in 38-degree water has nothing to gain by moving.

A word about what this forecast can and cannot tell you. For a resident fish in a lake, the fish are always there and the only question is whether they will feed. For steelhead the first question is whether there are fish in your river at all, and that depends on run timing, hatchery schedules, ocean survival and the rainfall that triggered the last push upstream. **We do not know that, and no weather model does.** What we can score is the part that decides your day once fish are present, and for steelhead that part is unusually well covered: flow and water temperature matter more for this species than for almost any resident fish, and both are measured here from USGS gauges rather than guessed. Seasonal Patterns

spring

Spawning runs through March into May, on gravel, as water climbs through the 40s. Fish are aggressive and accessible early in this window and then increasingly occupied with spawning. Many rivers close or restrict fishing over spawning gravel, and fish actively on redds should be left alone whether or not the rule says so. Spent fish dropping back downstream afterwards are thin, tired and worth releasing quickly.

summer

The quiet season on most water, and the exception that proves the rule on some. Summer-run steelhead enter rivers from late spring through autumn and hold for months before spawning, which supports genuine summer fisheries on the Deschutes, the Clearwater, the North Umpqua and a handful of others. Where they exist, summer fish behave far more conventionally than winter fish, coming best at first and last light in water that no longer needs to warm up. Everywhere else, summer is when steelhead are not in the river.

The autumn run, and the start of the season for most anglers. Great Lakes tributaries fill from October as fish follow salmon upstream to feed on their eggs, which is the one time of year steelhead genuinely are feeding and the reason egg patterns and beads dominate the fly boxes. Pacific coastal rivers see their first significant pushes on the autumn rains. Water is still warm enough that the fish are active across more of the day than they will be in January.

winter

The main event, and the hardest fishing. Water in the 30s makes fish lethargic and pushes them into deep slow pools, shale ledges and pool tailouts where they can hold without working. Presentations slow to a dead drift. This is also when the day narrows sharply: a river at 34 degrees at dawn may not reach a temperature the fish will move in until late morning. January is the low point. From February, as water climbs off its floor and fish stage ahead of the spawn, the fishing improves into the biggest seasonal lift we apply to this species.

Best Times to Fish

dawn

The weakest window in winter, and the received wisdom is to sleep through it. A river at its coldest point of the day is a river where steelhead have the least reason to move. In autumn, and on summer-run water, dawn is genuinely good, so this reverses with the season more than for any other species here.

midday

The peak on winter water. Once the river has picked up a couple of degrees through the morning, fish that would not move at first light will. Late morning through early afternoon is the window most winter steelhead are caught in, which is a rare piece of angling advice that lets you have breakfast first.

dusk

Fading in winter as the water gives back its warmth, though better than dawn because the river is still holding the day's heat. On summer-run rivers the evening is one of the two best windows, alongside first light.

night

Not a fishery, and on most steelhead water not legal either. Night angling closures are common on rivers with spawning runs and exist for good reason.

solunar

Moderate solunar sensitivity, and comfortably outranked by flow and water temperature. A steelhead river that has just dropped into shape after a freshet will fish well regardless of the lunar calendar, and one running low and clear will not fish well because of it.

Weather Response

cold Front

The temperature effect matters and the pressure effect does not. A hard freeze drops river temperature, pushes fish into the deepest slow water, and shortens the productive part of the day at both ends. The response is to fish later, slow down, and target the softest water you can find rather than to stay home.

warm Front

Among the most useful signals for this species. Warming lifts a winter river off its floor toward the range where steelhead will actually move, and a few degrees is the difference between a dead river and a good one. A warm rain that raises and colours the water at the same time is the classic steelhead trigger.

stable Pressure

A long settled spell drops rivers low and clear, which is the condition steelhead anglers complain about most. Fish become spooky, hold in the deepest available water and refuse anything obvious. Go lighter, go smaller, and fish the low-light margins of the day even in winter.

rain

The single most important weather event in steelhead fishing, and the reason this species rewards watching a forecast. Rain raises rivers and triggers fresh fish to push upstream from the estuary or the lake. The fishing peak is not during the rise but on the drop afterwards, when the river is falling and green with roughly one to four feet of visibility. Too much rain blows the river out entirely; the skill is in reading how long it takes to come back into shape.

Proven Techniques

Float and Jig

A jig or bait suspended under a float, drifted at current speed through runs and tailouts. The dominant steelhead method across the Great Lakes and much of the Pacific Northwest because it presents at a controlled depth for the entire drift, which matters enormously with a fish that will not move far to eat in cold water.

Beads and Egg Patterns

In autumn, steelhead follow spawning salmon upstream and eat their eggs, and this is the one period when they are feeding rather than reacting. A bead pegged above a bare hook, or a yarn egg pattern, dead-drifted through the run behind spawning fish is as close to a sure thing as steelhead offer. Colour matters more than size.

Swinging Flies

The traditional method and the one most steelhead anglers eventually gravitate toward: cast across, let the fly swing on a tight line through the run, take a step, repeat. Far less efficient than nymphing and far more satisfying, because the grab comes on a taut line. Best in water above the low 40s, since a swung fly asks a fish to move.

Drift Fishing Bait

Spawn sacs, cured roe or a sand shrimp bounced along the bottom on a light dropper. The old-school approach, still the most productive way to reach fish holding in the deepest slow winter water where a float rig struggles and a swung fly will never get down.

Plugs and Diving Baits

Backtrolled plugs worked slowly down through a run cover water thoroughly and provoke fish that are not interested in eating anything. Particularly effective on high, coloured water when visibility is limited and the fish need something loud to react to.

What is the difference between steelhead and rainbow trout?

They are the same species, Oncorhynchus mykiss, split by a decision made early in life about whether to stay in fresh water or migrate to sea. The sea-run fish grow far larger, typically five to twelve pounds against under two for a resident in the same river, and return to spawn having largely stopped feeding. That single difference drives everything else: steelhead strike from aggression rather than hunger, react to flow far more than to hatches, respond much worse to cold, and bite in the middle of a winter day rather than at dawn. Offspring of steelhead can stay resident and offspring of residents can go to sea, so the two are not separate populations so much as two strategies.

When is steelhead season?

It depends on which of three fisheries you are near, which is why one answer will not do. Great Lakes tributaries run from October, when fish follow spawning salmon upstream for their eggs, through winter and into a spring spawning run. Pacific winter-run fish enter coastal rivers from December through April on the rains. Pacific summer-run fish enter from late spring through autumn and hold for months before spawning the following spring, which supports the summer fisheries on rivers like the Deschutes and the North Umpqua. Across all three, late winter into early spring is when the fishing is best and the fish are largest.
