Overview
Mahi-mahi are the fish that makes offshore fishing worth the fuel. They are among the fastest-growing animals in the ocean, reaching over four feet in a single year and rarely living past five, and everything about them follows from that pace: they eat constantly, they spawn every two or three days through a season that can run year round, and they are gone almost as quickly as they arrive. They are also, by broad agreement, the best-looking fish anyone will ever pull over a gunwale, and the colour drains out of them within minutes of it happening.
Mahi hold from about 70 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit with an ideal near 81. Satellite and tagging work puts them spending 95 percent of their time in surface temperatures between 77 and 84 degrees, and preferring 80 to 82 while pushing north on warm currents. Below about 70 they are simply not there: mahi do not tolerate cold, they leave it.
That last point makes this species unusual on this site in a useful way. For lake trout, the water temperature we can measure is a surface reading describing water the fish is not in. For mahi it is the opposite. They live in the surface layer, and offshore anglers already plan trips around sea surface temperature charts, hunting colour changes and temperature breaks because that is where the weed lines and the bait collect. For mahi-mahi the measured surface temperature is not a proxy for the answer. It is very close to being the answer.

Seasonal Patterns
spring
The peak across Florida and the Gulf, and the biggest mahi fishery by participation anywhere. Warm water pushes north and mahi come with it, riding the Gulf Stream edge and stacking on weed lines and colour changes. Fish are hungry and often in schools, so a good weed line can produce a dozen before the boat has moved. This is the season our scoring lifts hardest.
summer
Fish continue north with the warm water, reaching the Carolinas, the Mid-Atlantic and by late summer the Northeast canyons. Southern waters get hotter and the schools thin out and go further offshore. Big solitary bulls become a larger share of the catch as the schooling fish disperse.

A second decent window as fish move back south ahead of cooling water, though never as concentrated as the spring push. Late-season fish average larger. In Hawaii the seasonal pattern is far flatter than on the mainland, with fish present year round and a spring peak.
winter
Gone from most of the range. Mahi follow warm water rather than going deep, so a winter score for this species is reporting absence rather than lethargy. South Florida, the Keys and Hawaii keep a genuine winter fishery, because the water there never drops out of their range.
Best Times to Fish
dawn
Strong, though on most trips it is spent running rather than fishing, since the weed lines are usually a long way out. The bite is good if you can be there for it.
midday
The peak, which is unusual and entirely practical. Mid-morning through early afternoon is when boats that left at first light are actually on the fish, and it is also when a sight hunter in clear water has the most light to work with. There is no midday lull offshore of the kind that shapes inshore fishing.
dusk
Falling away, and usually spent running home. Fish are still catchable but boats are rarely still out there, and the practical constraint is the ride back rather than the bite.
night
Effectively nothing. Mahi hunt by sight in clear blue water and stop when it goes dark, which is one of the sharpest day-night contrasts on this site.
solunar
Moderate solunar sensitivity, and comfortably behind sea surface temperature, weed line presence and sea state. A mahi trip is decided by whether you can find warm blue water with structure floating in it, not by the moon.
Weather Response
A front that drops surface temperature pushes mahi south and offshore, sometimes within a day or two, and the effect is on presence rather than mood. In spring a front can stall a northward run for a week. The wind that arrives with it usually cancels the trip regardless.
The signal that matters for this species. Warming surface water pulls mahi north and inshore, and a warm spell in spring can bring the first fish of the year into range days ahead of the usual date. Watching sea surface temperature move is the whole game.
Settled weather is what a mahi trip needs, mostly because it lets weed lines form and hold together. A few calm days after a blow builds well-defined sargassum lines with bait under them, which is close to ideal.
Little direct effect on the fish. What matters is the wind that comes with it: chop breaks up weed lines and scatters the structure this entire fishery is built on, and a lumpy sea makes spotting a line or a piece of debris far harder.
Proven Techniques
Trolling Ballyhoo on a Weed Line
The standard offshore approach: rigged ballyhoo behind a skirt, pulled along the edge of a sargassum line or a colour change. Work the edge rather than through the middle, and turn back on any fish raised, because mahi school and where there is one there are usually more.
Pitching Live Bait
When a school comes up behind the boat, live pilchards or small mackerel pitched into it will hold the school alongside while you catch several. The trick is to keep one hooked fish in the water, because the rest of the school will stay with it. Lose them all at once and the school leaves.
Casting to Floating Debris
A weed line is the obvious version, but a pallet, a lobster pot buoy or a single length of timber will hold fish. Shut down well short, drift in, and cast past it. Small pieces of debris in blue water are worth checking every time, and a surprising number hold something.
Working a Temperature Break
Sea surface temperature charts show where warm and cool water meet, and mahi concentrate along those edges because bait does. Running a break rather than a compass heading is how offshore boats decide where to fish, and it is the most useful planning tool for this species.
Bailing with Light Tackle
Once a school is held alongside, light spinning gear with a small jig or a fly turns the day into something considerably more fun than winching. Mahi jump repeatedly and fight far above their weight, and a two-foot fish on a light rod is a serious proposition.

Why do mahi hold under weed lines?

Working the edges of a line and casting into gaps beats trolling through the middle, and any piece of debris in blue water is worth a look.
What time of day is best for mahi?

How fast do mahi-mahi grow?
Faster than almost anything in the ocean. Mahi can exceed four feet in their first year of life and reach spawning maturity at four to five months old, and they rarely live past five years. That pace explains most of their behaviour: they feed constantly because they have to, they spawn every two or three days through a long season, and the population turns over so quickly that a good year class can transform the fishing within months. It is also why the stock holds up under heavy fishing pressure far better than a slow-growing species would.
When is mahi season?
It depends on where you are, because the fish follow warm water rather than a calendar. Florida and the Gulf peak in spring, roughly March through June, which is the biggest mahi fishery by participation anywhere. Through summer fish push north with the warm water, reaching the Carolinas, the Mid-Atlantic and by August the Northeast canyons off New York. Autumn brings a second, smaller window as they move back south. Hawaii and the Florida Keys have fish year round, because the water there never drops below the range mahi will tolerate.
Is mahi-mahi the same as dolphin?
It is the same fish as the dolphinfish, and it has nothing to do with the marine mammal. The Hawaiian name mahi-mahi became standard on menus precisely to stop diners assuming they were being served a porpoise, and it has now largely replaced dolphin among anglers too. Dorado is the common name across Latin America and among many offshore fishermen. All three refer to Coryphaena hippurus, and the different names mostly signal which coast the speaker learned to fish on.
