Overview
Wahoo, ono in Hawaii, are the fastest fish in the ocean over a short burst and one of the few that will comfortably outrun a boat. Everything about how they are caught follows from that: high-speed trolling at twelve to eighteen knots, heavy wire leaders because they will part anything else with a single pass, and a strike that empties a reel before anyone has reached the rod. The Hawaiian name means delicious, which is the other reason they are pursued so hard.
Wahoo hold from about 68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit with an ideal near 76. Their measured preferred temperature averages 24.7 degrees Celsius, which is 76 Fahrenheit, and anglers report a reliable window between 73 and 78. Tagging off Baja has them spending 98 percent of their time above 22 degrees Celsius and almost entirely above the thermocline, so like mahi and unlike lake trout this is a surface-layer fish and the sea surface temperature we can measure describes water it is genuinely in.
They are structure fish in a way most blue-water species are not. Wahoo work the tops and edges of steep terrain, shelf breaks, drop-offs and seamounts in roughly 120 to 600 feet, and concentrate hardest where a temperature or colour break meets that structure and funnels bait. A trolling pass that crosses a contour line at an angle covers more good water than one that runs parallel to it.

Seasonal Patterns
spring
April and May are the biggest lift we apply to this species. Ono show up in numbers around the Hawaiian islands and Atlantic fish push onto the shelf edges as warm water arrives. Fish are aggressive and concentrated on structure, and this is the most reliable window of the year across most of the range.
summer
Spawning runs through the warm months and the fish keep feeding throughout, since wahoo are broadcast spawners with no bed to guard. Kona peaks across this period. In the Atlantic the fish spread north along the shelf edge as far as the Carolinas, thinning out as they go.
fall
A solid second season as water begins to cool and bait moves. Fish concentrate again on the same shelf edges and drop-offs they used in spring, and the average size tends to be better than in summer.

This is where wahoo differ from every other warm-water fish on this site: they have opposite seasons in different places. The Bahamas and south Florida run a serious winter wahoo fishery in water still sitting in the mid 70s, while everywhere the water actually drops out of their range they are simply gone. Our scoring handles that by gating the winter penalty on water temperature rather than the calendar, so a warm January in the Bahamas is not marked down for being January.
Best Times to Fish
dawn
The peak, though only modestly ahead of the rest of the day. Wahoo feed hardest early, and boats running high-speed spreads want the first hours on the structure they intend to work.
midday
Genuinely productive, which sets wahoo apart from most fish in this guide. High-speed trolling works right through the middle of the day, and the broad daylight plateau reflects a fishery where you keep covering water rather than waiting for a window.
dusk
Strong again in the last hours of light, close to the morning. Worth staying out for if the ride home allows.
night
Effectively nothing. Wahoo hunt by sight in clear water and the bite falls away hard as the light goes, much as it does for mahi. Nothing here resembles the yellowfin night fishery.

Weather Response
A front that pulls surface temperature down moves wahoo rather than shutting them off, and the effect is on where they are rather than whether they feed. In the Atlantic a cold push can concentrate fish along a sharpened temperature break, which is worth finding.
Warm blue water pushing onto the shelf is the classic wahoo trigger. It creates exactly the sharp boundary against cooler green water that this species hunts along, and a warm spell that moves the break inshore can turn a mediocre area on within a day.
Settled weather is mostly about sea state, since high-speed trolling in a lump is unpleasant and inefficient. Calm conditions also let temperature and colour breaks hold their shape rather than being mixed away.
Little direct effect. Wahoo are offshore surface fish and rain does not reach the things that matter to them. The wind that accompanies it does, by making a high-speed spread hard to fish.
Proven Techniques
High-Speed Trolling
Twelve to eighteen knots, which feels absurd the first time and is the single most effective wahoo method there is. Heavy bullet-head lures on wire, run deep on planers or heavy trolling leads, covering ground fast along a shelf edge. Wahoo can catch anything you can pull, and speed both triggers them and keeps other species off the gear.
Wire Leaders, Not Optional
Wahoo teeth will part heavy monofilament and fluorocarbon cleanly and often without the angler feeling it. Single-strand or cable wire between lure and leader is standard, and the fish are aggressive enough that the visibility cost is negligible. Anyone who has run mono for a day and lost six lures learns this quickly.
Working the Contour
Wahoo hold on the tops and edges of steep structure in 120 to 600 feet. A trolling pass that cuts across the contour at an angle covers far more productive water than one running parallel along it, and crossing a temperature or colour break where it meets the drop-off is the highest-percentage line you can run.
Deep Planers and Downriggers
Getting lures down thirty to sixty feet at speed puts them in front of fish that will not come up to a surface bait. Planers are the traditional answer and heavy trolling weights the simpler one. On a slow day, going deeper is usually the more productive adjustment than going slower.
Live Baiting on Structure
Slow-trolling or drifting a live bait over a seamount or shelf edge when fish are known to be present. Less efficient for searching than high-speed trolling, but effective once a concentration is located, and the method of choice when the sea state makes high speed unpleasant.
Wahoo vs Yellowfin Tuna
Both blue-water fish caught on the same grounds, and they want almost opposite things from a trip. One rewards speed and daylight, the other patience and darkness.

Wahoo Fishing Questions
Is the full moon really better for wahoo?
A great many experienced captains say so, particularly in Hawaii, where trips are routinely planned around it and the Kona season is often described as running from the full moon in May. It is close to universal belief among people who fish for ono. We still weight lunar timing only moderately for wahoo, and the reason is that this site does not treat angler consensus as evidence. It removed zodiac scoring as pseudoscience, cut moon phase to a token weight after a study found no significant lunar effect on trout catch rates, and reduced barometric pressure after a run of null results. There is no equivalent catch-rate study for wahoo, and the most rigorous lunar work available, on muskellunge, put the maximum effect at around five percent. We would rather under-claim than encode folklore.
So why do so many people believe it?
Because the proposed mechanism is real, even if the size of the effect is unproven. The explanation captains give is not moonlight but tide: spring tides around the full and new moon move considerably more water, and moving water concentrates bait. If that is what is happening then the effect is genuine, but it is a tidal effect rather than a lunar one, and our scoring already accounts for tidal movement as its own factor. Weighting solunar heavily on top of that would count the same phenomenon twice and make the model look more confident than the evidence supports.

Measured preferred temperature averages 24.7 degrees Celsius, which is 76 Fahrenheit almost exactly, and anglers consistently report a reliable window between 73 and 78. Why troll so fast for wahoo?
Two reasons. Wahoo are the fastest fish in the ocean over a short burst, so speed does not put a lure out of reach the way it would for almost anything else, and a fast-moving bait triggers a reaction strike from a fish built entirely around ambush at speed. The second reason is practical: at twelve to eighteen knots you cover a great deal of shelf edge in a day, and most other species leave the gear alone, so a high-speed spread is effectively a wahoo-only spread. It feels wrong the first time and it works.
Do I need wire leader for wahoo?
Yes, without meaningful exception. Wahoo teeth part heavy monofilament and fluorocarbon cleanly, frequently without the angler registering that anything happened beyond a slack line. Single-strand or cable wire between the lure and the leader is standard practice, and because wahoo are aggressive and the water is usually moving fast the visibility penalty is negligible. The Bahamas and south Florida, by contrast, run a serious winter fishery, because the water there stays in the mid 70s all year and the fish concentrate.
